Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty Recovery

Selective laser trabeculoplasty recovery is not difficult but will take a couple of weeks. During this time, you can expect to have a follow up visit with your eye doctor at least twice to make sure that everything is healing. When you get this type of laser surgery, the iris will be very tender as it is essentially releasing the pressure around the iris.

The first thing that you need to understand about the selective laser trabeculoplasy recovery is that you will need someone to take you home from the clinic or hospital where you get the surgery. You cannot expect to be able to drive when you are released. You should be able to have a friend or relative drive you home from your surgery, at which time you can then relax and keep your eyes from the light.

Dark glasses are also part of the selective laser trabeculoplasty recovery. You will want to keep your eyes from the light. The light can cause harm to the eyes and you will most likely be instructed to wear dark glasses when you leave the clinic. Once you are home, you should try to keep your eyes away from the light and rest your eyes. You will not want to watch television or use the computer after you have had your eye surgery and you will most likely be wearing a patch on your eye.

You may have a slight headache after you have received a trabeculoplasty surgery. Part of the selective laser trabeculoplasty recovery will be to take pain killers for the headache. The doctor will prescribe medication that will alleviate any pain that might be endured because of the surgery. For the most part, however, there is no pain from the surgery. Part of the selective laser trabeculoplasty will be to relax and allow the eye to heal. There may be a bit of discomfort from the surgery as if you have something in your eye, but not to the extent where you feel as though you are in any pain.

If you have glaucoma and have been advised to get this type of laser surgery, be grateful for the opportunity to be able to successfully treated for this condition and have your sight. Glaucoma is no longer a sentence that causes one to be blind. Years ago, those who had glaucoma were destined to be blind. Today, thanks to laser surgery that can reach areas close to the iris that were unreachable before, and relieve the pressure of the optic nerve, people who have glaucoma have hope to retain their sight.

Take a few weeks off of work and give yourself plenty of time to heal when you decide upon selective laser surgery. Time will make your selective laser trabeculoplasty recovery go by much quicker.
